I'm an Employee. How do I cancel my health insurance?
"Cancel" can mean three different things. Find the one that matches what you want to do.
1. I want to cancel or switch my health plan
Your health plan is between you and your insurer, so StretchDollar can't cancel it for you. If your plan is through the marketplace (HealthCare.gov or your state's exchange), you can cancel it anytime by logging in to your marketplace account and ending the coverage. For a plan bought directly from an insurer, contact the insurer. Their phone number is on your insurance card.
- Have your new plan in place first, so you don't have a gap in coverage. Double-check the end date of the old plan and the start date of the new one.
- Tell us about the change. Email [email protected] so we can stop the reimbursement for your old plan. Then set up auto-reimbursement for your new plan with its proof of coverage.
- Paid a full year upfront? Ask your insurer about a refund before you cancel.
2. I want to stop using my StretchDollar benefit
If you're staying with your employer but don't want the allowance, you can Waive it. In your Benefits Portal, choose the option to waive your allowance and click Confirm waive, or email [email protected] and we'll help.
- Waiving stops your reimbursements for the year. To accept again later, you'll generally need a qualifying life event or to wait for Open Enrollment.
- Waiving doesn't cancel your health plan. If you want to end that too, see section 1.
- Switching to a premium tax credit instead? See I accepted the subsidy and my StretchDollar benefit. What do I do?
3. I'm leaving my job
When you leave, your employer ends your StretchDollar benefit in their portal. You'll see a message with your last day of access.
- Reimbursements: auto-reimbursements stop after the month you leave. You can still submit one-time reimbursements for months you were covered, until the date shown in your portal. See What happens to my pending reimbursement if my job ends?
- Your health plan stays active. It's yours, so leaving your job doesn't cancel it. From then on, you pay the full premium yourself, or you can cancel or switch it as described in section 1.
- You may qualify for help. Without the ICHRA, you may be eligible for a premium tax credit through the marketplace. Check with your marketplace.
